With its sophisticated color palette of muted pastels and gold accents on its curvilinear forms, this vase looks remarkably contemporary and on-trend a hundred years later. Part of an entire line of fine porcelain vases heavily influenced by the Viennese Secession style, it is — like most of Galluba & Hofmann's decorative arts pieces — a beautifully petite vase that houses a small piece of design history in its softly arcing handles and pleasing decorations.
DETAILS: Galluba and Hofmann became internationally best known — and highly collected — for their very large catalog of bathing beauties (sometimes called naughties or bawdies). Their earlier European fame rests, however, on their quality porcelain home-wares, of which this vase is one beautiful example. Most of the most sought after pieces feature Secessionist/Arts & Crafts patterns and similar color schemes hand-painted on their high quality, unfussy forms. The mark on this vase is circa 1905-1937; the style dates it to the earlier end of that range. Incised "6705" and ink stamped "5" on the bottom, as well as with the G&H shield (somewhat smudged, but genuine). 5" tall, 3.5" handle to handle (125mm x 90mm).
CONDITION: Very good, with no chips or cracks. There is very little wear to the decoration (it was intended to be very soft pastel in color).
STYLE NOTES: Secessionist, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Prairie
