Whimsical and charming, this Deco delight is the perfect stand for high tea served with verve or a cupcake party par excellence. With a lovely dancing maiden twirling atop its chrome handle, it will make any gathering seem fabulous!
Details: This cake stand presents something of a mystery; in fact it seems almost unique in the world of vintage serving pieces. It is clearly of professional manufacture: the plates on this stand are by Kelsboro, which, while producing some very pretty dinnerware, is principally known as the maker of caricature "Toby" mugs. The mark on the plates shows them likely to have been made in the thirties since it dates from then and the style of the decoration is from that period.
The handle, the true attraction of the piece, appears in style and method of manufacture to be from the twenties, as the pose and look of the girl are very much of the era. It was common then (as it is now) for metal foundries to combine dinnerware bought wholesale with trim of their own manufacture to sell as a new product. It's likely this is just such an item, and it may have been that the handle was one the reseller had in stock (Kelsboro is not known to have used metal parts). In any case, the handle is of very good build: it is quite heavy and beautifully wrought, and we have never before seen one like it.
CONDITION: The plates are unchipped and the decals and gold trim are in good condition, but the plates do show fine crazing. The chrome handle figure is in very good condition considering its age: there are surface scratches, and one break in the chrome at the twist of the foot as well as a few small areas of loss on the post, but it is not rusted at all and is still quite sturdy.
SIZE: 9.5" in diameter (bottom plate) by 12" high overall
CIRCA: 1920s-1930s
SHIPPING: Because this item is breakable, the shipping costs automatically include insurance. The stand does come apart and will be shipped as flat pieces which will require quite minor reassembly.
