This gorgeous 19th century design features an ever-so-jaunty squirrel handled top. Originally this dish was covered in painted designs, but with the years the paint has been lost, allowing the gorgeous robin's egg blue to shine through and the charm of its intricate rococo detailing to take center stage. It's beautiful because of its age — it's not worn out, it's worn in!
DETAILS: Portieux-Vallerysthal (a merger of two companies) was a prolific late 19th and early 20th century French manufacturer that not only made glass for Europe, but also sold molds to American glass companies. Most P-V pieces have no manufacturer's mark and were paper labeled for the European market. The US's Westmoreland bought many of their glass molds from P-V and made dishes from them in a huge array of colors in slightly edited and redesigned formats. These later reproductions are often unmarked as well, so attribution requires knowledge of the myriad differences. This squirrel handled dish is a guaranteed French original, circa 1895-1925.
CONDITION: Good condition for glassware of this age. The color is vivid robin's egg blue (very close to a Tiffany blue) and it has a lovely translucence around its edges that is unlike most American glass; there are some expected swirls of darker glass and a few extra knobs along mold seams and color inconsistencies, but overall few; there are few tiny specs of original paint. The exterior is not chipped or cracked. There is an interior chip to the underside of the lid (a common place for them on this piece) as shown in picture four. It still displays beautifully. The size is 5.5" long by 3.4" wide by 4.75" tall.
STYLE NOTES: Rococo, Baroque, French Traditional
SHIPPING: The cost includes shipping and insurance to the continental US
