Free form and avant garde, this very large dish celebrates high design with classic materials and methods. It lends arch mid-century style to any setting with its ûber-cool shape, then pours on regal charm with its nervy splashes of silver.
Details: Dorothy Thorpe is one of the most well-known glass designers of the twentieth century; for designs in this line she painted with metal accents on textured glass. While there were other designers who produced beautiful pieces using the same conventions, none have surpassed her in mastery of form and texture. This particular very large Thorpe centerpiece dish is fashioned of molded textured glass which is smooth on the inside, grainy on the outside. It has glass onlay designs that form a pattern that very much looks like a double strand of DNA encircling it, a motif and method Thorpe explored for a period. It also features artfully applied sterling brushmarks that highlight the onlay, and a silver rim to give it a finished look. The overall impression is of a giant cell complete with an off-center nucleus, or perhaps an amoeba.
